Meet upcoming artist Cvrtdaguy, from Brooklyn NY. He just released his debut EP called Dear World, and it serves as a great introduction to his sound and skills as a rapper. On the 6-track project, Cvrt has a conversation with the listener about his life, reminiscing on high school days, and allowing fans into who he is as an artist.
Although he’s just getting started, the rising talent is coming in heavy with the bars. Cvrtdaguy is definitely someone you should keep an eye out for. His talent and efforts were on full display in the EP, but it’s clear that he has much more to offer and has a lot of potential. With a gritty sound and a delivery that can be described as assertive, Cvrtdaguy sets himself apart from the rest.

What city are you from/ Where are you based now?
Originally I’m from Brooklyn, NY but moved from there back in 2014 to Elizabeth City, NC. But I moved around since because of my career choice.
What is your artist name? What is your real name? How did you get your artist name?
My artist name is Cvrtdaguy and my real name is Curtis Mcdonald. I got my artist name by taking one of my many nicknames (Curt) and people would always tell me I’m “the guy.” They would come to me for whatever they need and I would be like “if you need it and I got it, I’ll give it.”
Has your upbringing played a role in shaping who you are and defining your sound today? If so, how?
My upbringing most definitely had a hand in my sound. I grew up in like an old soul environment where my family would play music anywhere from the 1950s and up. I try to leave a little bit of soul whenever I write a verse — just to have a reminder of who I am and what led me to this point in my music. Not trying to sound like a broken record but music has been a part of my family for a long time. I grew up around my grandfather on my pops side in NYC messing with DJ equipment on Friday nights at my grandma house. And I got family that sing in church, uncles that rap, and even my own father makes beats. So with all that around me of course, I wanted to do it myself. So I learned to engineer, produce and create my own stuff including cover art.
What ultimately inspired you to dedicate yourself to a music career?
What mainly gave me the inspiration for making music came from seeing how some of my favorite rappers would take words and just straight up create a picture you can vividly see. The cadences or rhyme scheme they’d use to just put you in a trance kept me in awe and still does today.
Tell us about the project that you are promoting. What is it about? Is it a single or EP? Also, what is the name of the last project you released?
The project Dear World is literally my first project I put out and its basically me introducing myself to the world in a 6- song EP. But instead of it being in a traditional format, I wanted to have it seem like a conversation with the listener the entire time.
What has the response been like to that project?
The response to the project so far has been dope, like people that actually f–k with me and give honest feedback and even told me the wait was worth it. This project was suppose to release months ago but me being so indecisive, I kept changing the track list up and it was making me go nuts trying to figure out what I wanted to release for sure.
What’s next for you? Are you working on any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for? Include some dates if you have them.
So I have an upcoming project releasing hopefully April 2021 that’s going to be a little bit different from what’s been shown in Dear World. My goal is to have at least 8-9 tracks for the next project. Also I’m in the process of getting my own clothing line established called “Fly High Apparel” so just be on the lookout for that too.
What message do you hope fans take away from your music?
The only message I have to my fans is just be patient with me — I take a long time to “perfect” my craft. I engineer, produce, and mix and master my own music. Quality takes time.
