Interview: Da Crook talks inspirations and impact of his new project ‘Who Decides War’

Da Crook
Da Cook spoke with Remixd Magazine about his influences.

Da Crook, born and raised in Toronto’s West End, is an artist whose journey through life is as raw and unfiltered as his music. With his latest project Who Decides War that just dropped, Da Crook invites listeners into his world. A world shaped by personal struggles, triumphs, and the chaos of the streets.

From his early days as a teenager sporting Crooks and Castles apparel to earning his street name “Crook,” Da Crook’s path to becoming an artist was paved with influences from the gritty realities of urban life. His sound, he describes, is a fusion of raw energy, lyrical prowess, and an experiential journey through the streets of Toronto.

“There were several life moments that fueled my inspiration for this project,” Da Crook told RemixdMag. “Like becoming a father in the last 3 years and losing friends to the system. Friends fighting for freedom are aspects surrounding the album. Even if you don’t live this life, you’ll know it’s real. Even if you can’t relate to my lifestyle, you can feel and see how it’s communicated.”

But Da Crook’s music isn’t just about showcasing his skills. Moreover, it’s a reflection of his life experiences and the world around him. “Music saved my life,” he shares, emphasizing the transformative power of art in shaping his identity and providing an outlet for his voice.

Da Crook On Inspirations

Influenced by hip-hop legends like Biggie, Camron, and Jadakiss, as well as the mix of sounds his father introduced him to, Da Crook’s music is a testament to the diverse types of influences that have shaped his artistic vision.

Who Decides War is more than just an album; it’s a testament to Da Crook’s evolution as an artist and as a person. Inspired by life-changing moments such as becoming a father and losing friends to the system, the album dives deep into the struggles of street life. He offers a perspective that is both authentic and unapologetic.

Collaborating with producers he has worked with for years, Da Crook has crafted a project that is melodic, raw, and deeply personal. Tracks like “Down” featuring Skilla Baby showcase the unique cultural influences that shape both artists, offering listeners a glimpse into the cities that have molded their identities.

Through his music, Da Crook hopes to convey a message of honesty, growth, and resilience. “I want listeners to know the odds were against me, but I made it through,” he says.
