Meka Luxx tells Remixd Magazine about how his project came together.
Currently based in the DMV, Meka Luxx (@mekaluxx) incorporates his different living experiences in places like Nigeria and Atlanta to create a diverse sound. He recently spoke with Remixd Magazine to discuss his journey and what his future entails.
Born Jesse Chiemeka Onuegbu, this Nigerian-American recording artist is living proof that Afrobeats is an evolving genre. Far from a typical Afrobeats sound, there’s a sentimental value embedded in his music that can be credited to his authentic West African roots.

When he was in the beginning stages of his career, Meka explains how he was more focused on being a rapper. “When I decided to take music seriously as a performer, I was rapping at first. I had a melody rap style.” As time progressed, he found a way to develop his sound so that listeners could hear his direct influences of afrobeats & rap in one place.
While discussing his musical influences, Meka made sure to give his flowers to international hitmakers like J Hus & Burna Boy. Both of these future legends helped pave the way for Afrobeats artists like Meka to simultaneously showcase both their singing & rapping abilities.
2023 was a remarkable year for Meka, as this was the year, he delivered his long-awaited full-length release, “WHERE THERE’S SMOKE”. With a runtime of 22 minutes and a concise tracklist of eight songs, this project perfectly encapsulates Meka’s versatile artistry. He further explained, “The point of this project was to send off that warning. This is my vibe. This is who I am and what I got going on. But if you track and trail the smoke, you’re going to see I’m really coming.”
As of right now, Meka is still in the process of promoting his latest project, “WHERE THERE’S SMOKE.” He explained, “I took time to really get into having everything set with the last project that I just put out. And we just shot a video this weekend actually for ‘Water’. So right now, putting that video out and still organizing a couple of things with the rollout for that project. Probably into the new year, we’ll get into some new music, for sure.”
