The best new music from the week of February 13th!
It’s New Music Friday! As a result of it being Valentine’s weekend, there is an abundance of love in the air. More importantly, all the music that’s being released this week perfectly reflects all the yearning taking place. This week’s edition of New Music Friday features standout releases from Brent Faiyaz, Sexyy Red, and Larry June. Read on to find the latest tracks and albums that dropped this week.
New Music Friday Picks
Brent Faiyaz – ‘Icon’ (Album)
Over time, Brent has rightfully earned his reputation as the “toxic R&B singer.” To some extent, there is some truth to it, but ‘Icon’ is able to effectively show that he’s able to write about other things. If anything, a lot of his evolution can be attributed to the legendary Raphael Saadiq, who executive-produced this album. In this case, Saadiq softened Brent out and breathed new life into music.
Sexyy Red – “Hang Wit A Bad B*tch” ft Key Glock
On paper, it felt like it was time to write off Sexyy Red, especially with all of her antics. Compared to her past work, “Hang Wit A Bad B*tch” brings that same intensity that reminds you why she even blew up. Not to mention, Key Glock completely spazzes out with his guest verse.
Larry June – “Everything Allocated” ft Curren$y
Sooner or later, Larry June will get the credit he deserves for the lyricist he is. To summarize “Everything Allocated,” it’s one of those tracks that makes you want to get your life together. Of course, we can’t forget the elite production from The Alchemist, which has me intensely licking my chops for their upcoming collaboration album.
R&B Corner
Jill Scott – ‘To Whom This May Concern’ (Album)
Sonically speaking, Jill Scott is far more advanced than we give her credit for, and her latest album shows it. Even though, it’s been eleven years she hasn’t lost her touch and stuck to her sound in a new way. Yet, it truly makes you wonder how someone can dip off for so long and return so gracefully.
Jamie Foxx – “Somebody”
On a related note, Jamie Foxx is also back making music and he sounds rejuvenated. It should be noted that this track is very reminiscent of the late great D’Angelo, which is a poetic nod. Without a doubt, it may be a while before we get another multifaceted sensation of his level.
Isaia Huron – “W.T.A.”
From here on out, expect to hear the name, Isaia Huron more frequently as he recently signed to RCA. On top of that, to celebrate this noteworthy achievement, he recently released, “W.T.A.” and it’s perfectly timed. In many ways, this song could’ve come out on any other holiday and still succeeded due to its undeniable appeal.
Rapper’s Delight
Eem Triplin – ‘a love song for u’ (EP)
To a degree, I really wish Eem Triplin didn’t choose to be an XXL Freshman, as it did more harm than good. Take the case of his new EP, out of the gate you can sense he doesn’t take himself too seriously due to his niche sound. As shown in the video for “a love song for u,” he brings a nostalgic late 2010’s sound that isn’t meant to be understood by a mainstream audience.
Shaddi G – ‘Stomper Muzik’ (Album)
Lastly, our final spot of New Music Friday goes to New Jersey’s own, Shaddi G. At any rate, Shaddi G is bound to blow and his latest project truly puts it into perspective. Lyrically speaking, he has separated himself from his peers due to his ability to tell his story without glorifying the struggle.
We hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of New Music Friday!
