New Music Friday: The best new music, featuring Offset, Mariah the Scientist, Earl Sweatshirt, and more

The best new music from the week of August 22nd!

It’s New Music Friday! It’s about that time of the year were we are slowly transitioning out of summer music. More importantly, the new music that’s being released reflects the somber feeling of the fall season. This week’s edition features standout releases from Offset, Mariah the Scientist, Earl Sweatshirt, and many more. Read on to find the latest tracks and albums that dropped this week.

New Music Friday Picks

Offset – ‘Kiari’ (Album)

When it comes to artists who have the best album rollouts, Offset has to be mentioned. To no surprise, his third album is living up to the hype of the rollout. Surprisingly, he uses this project as an opportunity to get extremely personal on topics like Takeoff’s death or his divorce. By far, he seems to have the best career post-Migos breakup.

Mariah the Scientist – ‘HEARTS SOLD SEPERATELY’ (Album)

This emerging R&B superstar has recently grown into a fan favorite and will reach even new heights of stardom with her new album. Taking inspiration from 90s R&B, Mariah uses the power of nostalgia to geniusly bridge the gap between the two eras. While she may not have the best vocals out of her peers, she makes up for it tremendously with her delicate pen game. It’s clear as day, she’s motivated and reached a new level of herself musically these past couple of months.

Earl Sweatshirt – ‘Live Laugh Love’ (Album)

In the same way that fellow OF member, Tyler the Creator has drastically evolved, one can say the same about Earl. Based on the lyrics of his new song, it’s apparent he’s in another headspace and is thinking completely differently. For someone who has been rapping from a young age, he still found a way to reach another sonic peak.

Female Fetales

Doja Cat – “Jealous Type”

Regardless, if you’re a fan or not, it’s hard not to get excited when Doja Cat is gearing up to release a new project. On her new release, “Jealous Type,” she did a great job of nailing that iconic pop/disco sound from the ’80s. Truly a master of world-building, it feels like she is stepping into a new era with her upcoming album.

Teyana Taylor – ‘Escape Room’ (LP)

When it’s all said and done, Teyana Taylor has to be remembered as a musical icon for being so extremely talented. Sadly, ‘Escape Room’ falls short of her full potential as we don’t get to see her maximize what she’s fully capable of. It also doesn’t help that it’s filled with spoken word interludes that don’t feel like an earned moment. Ultimately, this feels like a half-assed attempt at ‘Heaux Tales.’

Stacy Epps – ‘FLOWHEART’ (Album)

If you appreciate singers who possess soothing vocals, look no further than Stacy Epps. This former lawyer turned songstress just released her first album in over 12 years and it was well worth the wait. Her time away from music symbolically finishes what she started in an iconic fashion.

BJRNCK – “Safety”

In the case of Grammy-nominated singer, BJRNCK, she is no stranger to making her presence felt on every track. Her newest release, “Safety” takes listeners into her world built around her heartfelt storytelling abilities. If this track doesn’t do anything, it definitely sets the tone for her upcoming project and what’s to come.

R&B Corner

JayDon – “The Way You Move”

In the same manner, Usher’s prodigy, JayDon has already started to cement himself as a certified hitmaker. Based on his newest release, he refuses to be complacent and continues to level up. By far, his strongest asset is his ability to make listeners want to dance, which seems to be a lost art in today’s R&B.

We hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of New Music Friday!
