New Music Friday Picks
Leon Thomas – ‘MUTT Deluxe: HEEL’ (ALBUM)
There’s no R&B artist having as great of a year as renowned singer/songwriter, Leon Thomas. He recently earned his first platinum single as an artist with “MUTT” and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. Somehow, he found a way to make the album even better with the release of the deluxe version. With most artists’ deluxe, it can often come off as a cheap money grab, but that is not the case here. This deluxe actually feels like a deluxe and solidifies his place as a generational talent.
Meek Mill & G Herbo – “Survivor’s Guilt”
If you’re able to look past all the shenanigans, it’s hard to deny that Meek Mill is one of the purest rappers of our generation. His newest collab with G Herbo confirms that sentiment as they both put their soul and heart into this track. It’s no secret that G Herbo has always publicly admired Meek and considers him a primary influence. So, seeing them combine their talents on the same song is very much a full circle moment. Both of them put on a masterclass and will have you wanting a full-length collaboration project.
Chxrry – “Main Character”
Fresh off a new rebrand/name change, R&B popstar, Chxrry has tried her luck with the song of the summer. “Main Character” is another successful effort for her to step out of The Weeknd’s shadow and stand on her own. This song possesses such a nostalgic feel while being the perfect blend of R&B and pop. For this song to be something that started off as a casual TikTok snippet, it has exceeded expectations.
PLUTO – “WHIM WHAMIEE” (Remix) ft Sexyy Red
There is a new female rapper in the mix by the name of PLUTO that is making her presence felt. Her viral hit, “WHIM WHAMIEE” is about to peak to new heights, thanks to a remix from America’s sweetheart, Sexyy Red. Despite being from different cities, they are definitely on the same musical wavelength. It’s commendable to see Sexyy step into her role as an OG and embrace PLUTO, as opposed to doing the opposite. There is enough room for all female rappers to prosper, and collabs like this will only push the movement even further.
Honey Bxby – ‘Raw Honey’ (EP)
Los Angeles-based singer, Honey Bxby is definitely a name you should familiarize yourself with in the R&B scene. Her newly released EP, ‘Raw Honey‘ is the perfect introduction for new listeners as she offers a high-quality sound paired with strong vocals. But her use of samples has really set her apart from her peers. She has definitely earned the right to sample any song, because it’s almost a guarantee that she will do the song justice.
Clipse, Pusha T & No Malice – “Ace Trumpets”
Who could’ve predicted 2025 would mark the return of the legendary rap duo, Clipse? This brotherly duo is subtle reminder that these two are not be messed with when together. In fact, one would say No Malice outshined his younger brother, Pusha T as his bars/punchlines have more depth. The fact that he hasn’t done this kind of rap in years and is still better than most rappers, speaks levels to his raw talent.
XXXTENTACION & Juice WRLD – “whoa (mind in awe)” Remix
It’s a damn shame how X’s and Juice WRLD‘s estate has been taken care of after their passing. This release is proof that the focus is not on their legacy and instead on a quick buck. Based on how unfinished and the terrible autotune mixing on Juice WRLD’s vocals, there’s no reason this track should’ve seen the light of day.
Samara Cyn – “brand new teeth” ft Smino
Samara Cyn‘s music has certainly been a breath of fresh air for giving us the perfect combo of soul & a resonating message. Now that she’s constantly leveling up, she’s had the opportunity to work with even bigger artists like Smino. Usually, Smino outshines whoever song he’s featured on, but Samara surely gave him a run for his money on “brand new teeth.” Their flows match up smoothly as Samara sets the tone and Smino slides in with his signature smoothness.
We hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of New Music Friday.
