Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Ambré (@ambre) returns with her new single “Laugh later, Cry now.” It’s a hazy and emotionally layered record that feels both intimate and hypnotic. The track continues the New Orleans artist’s ability to make heartbreak feel cinematic without losing its rawness.
The song immediately drops listeners into a reflective headspace with the opening line, “Eyes portray your innocence, not the same as advertised,” before unraveling into thoughts about disillusionment, emotional attachment, and trying to hold onto something that may already be broken. Throughout the record, Ambré balances vulnerability with emotional numbness. Especially on lines like, “A thousand times thought we had something good, maybe it’s good for nothing.”
Sonically, “Laugh later, Cry now” feels dreamy and almost trance-like. Inspired by peyote, the psychoactive cactus associated with spiritual journeys and transformation, the song moves with a slow-burning atmosphere that mirrors emotional confusion and self-reflection. There’s also a subtle influence from Ambré’s New Orleans upbringing woven throughout the production. The texture here adds warmth and texture beneath the track’s darker emotional themes.
Ambré is on a creative run
The release arrives during an especially strong creative run for the singer. Earlier this year, she appeared on the cover of YAMS Magazine’s The Sacred Issue, while her recent releases continue pushing her deeper into the conversation surrounding modern alternative R&B. Her 2024 mixtape i do this sht in my sleep further showcased her talent for pairing deeply personal songwriting with experimental and genre-blurring production.
Long admired for projects like Pulp and Wanderlust, Ambré has steadily built one of the more distinct voices in contemporary R&B. Between collaborations with artists like H.E.R., Kehlani, and Chloe x Halle, and her own increasingly introspective solo work, she continues carving out a lane entirely her own.
