New Music Friday Picks

Albums/Mixtapes

Veeze – Y’all Won (Mixtape)

At any point, Veeze could lock in and go on another run similar to ‘GANGER,’ yet he has been taking his time in delivering a product his fans can enjoy. Under these conditions, fans are appreciative of any music they can get making the new mixtape Y’all Won a must-listen. Right away, it’s obvious he hasn’t lost a step and in fact, has evolved with his creative, drug-induced flows. The tongue-in-cheek reference is in the name. He’s letting fans know “y’all won” as in they’re finally getting the new music from him they’ve been asking for.

6LACK – Love is the New Gangsta (Album)

Finally, 6LACK is back with a new album and he sounds like a brand new man. All of a sudden, it makes perfect sense why he took time away from music, so he can return with a rejuvenated spirit. More importantly, you can instantly hear he’s at peace, because it’s reflected in the mature songwriting. The album features appearances from Young Thug, AZ Chike, 2Chainz and more. So far, 6LACK has been receiving a positive response from this project with fans saying it sounds “authentic” and genuine to his experiences. Classifying “love” as the new gangsta is definitely a statement, and his songs serve as the testament to that.

RJmrLA – MR. LA II (Album)

As it appears, RJmrLA seems to be one of the last seasoned California rap veterans still pushing. His newest, MR. LA II is a testament to his consistency and hustle. Digging into his new album, you can tell it’s something he poured his heart into, with every track. Aside from this, there’s not really much left for him to accomplish to be considered a LA legend. He’s recruited West Coast heavyweights such as The Game, Ty Dolla $ign, Kalan.FrFr, Wallie The Sensei, and more for this project. With each release, RJ proves that his music can stand the test of time.

mgk & Wiz Khalifa – blog era boyz (Mixtape)

Overall speaking, the blog era of rap is constantly overlooked, but mgk & Wiz found a way to relive it on their new tape, blog era boyz. Taking everything into account, especially that these two have transitioned out of mainstream hip-hop, they still found a way to appeal to their core audience and deliver nostalgia. It’s also worth noting that there is literally a little bit of everything for everyone, including some pop-punk vibes.

Singles

Blxst – “Just My Type” (Single)

What stands out in Blxst’s discography is how consistent he is and his newest single surely won’t disappoint. Because summer is around the corner, his newest track “Just My Type,” is the perfect pairing for a summer outing. In short, this track packs a punch with just the right amount of West Coast bounce. Something that Blxst knows how to execute perfectly. This single follows his previous release “Day After Day,” featuring Big Sad 1900 — which was another catchy bop & paired with a music video. Blxst is clearly teasing that something bigger is coming this year.

Rosabell – “Patience” (Single)

Unquestionably, Toronto has one of the most prominent R&B scenes and Rosabell is certainly someone you should buy stock in. In essence, she’s truly an artist who excels at harmonies and it’s apparent in her latest release, “Patience.” In brief, if you’re looking for a singer to draw you in with her vocals, prepare to be blown away by Rosabell. She’s set to release her three-track EP, In Bloom later in July, but has been warming up audiences with singles. According to Rosabell, the project will explore themes of self-discovery, idtentity, and what it means to carve out space as a Black woman in pop.

Blaq Tuxedo – “CRASH OUT” (Single)

GRAMMY Award-winning duo Blaq Tuxedo return with “CRASH OUT,” a moody new release that pushes their self-described “Rhythm & Punk” sound into darker territory. Blending distorted guitars, hypnotic basslines, and sleek R&B melodies, the track arrives as the duo’s first release since Should’ve Seen This Coming. Best known for work with Chris Brown, Ciara, and Doja Cat, Blaq Tuxedo continue shaping modern R&B from both sides of the boards.

Fatt Smaxk – “Smaxk or Die” ft Playboi Carti (Single)

Behind the scenes, Fatt Smaxk seems to be the hottest ATL freshman at the moment. From a practical standpoint, it was genius for him to incorporate Carti on the remix of his buzzing track. Having said that, as you can imagine his feature elevated this track to a new high, while putting the world onto a budding star.

Slayr – Homerunner (Single)

Lastly, our last spot of New Music Friday goes to rising underground rapper, Slayr. With that said, if you ever need any convincing that this kid is the future, look no further than “Homerunner.” Fresh from his Rolling Loud debut, he showcases all the qualities that you’d want in an emerging star. With a bit of consistency and time, the industry will soon catch on to what his fanbase already knows.

We hope you enjoyed this week’s edition of New Music Friday. Stay tuned for next week’s roundup!
