New Music Friday Picks
It’s New Music Friday! Upon reflection, this slew of new releases was able to tie up all the loose ends for the week. Under this framework, you can expect the music to live up to the hype with a smidgen of overcompensation. This week’s new drops includes releases from Tyla, Loe Shimmy, Moneybagg Yo, and many more.
Tyla – ‘A*POP’ (Album)
At the core, Tyla has successfully transitioned past “Water” with her new album having a fresh evolution from her previous Afrobeat style. Stripped down, she takes a more pop-forward approach with R&B, dancehall, and amapiano influence. Assuming that you don’t go into this album expecting something ground-breaking, you will still be left impressed.
Loe Shimmy – ‘Pretty Girlz Run The World’ (Album)
Upon closer review, there might not be another artist on the level of Loe Shimmy that’s directly catering to the ladies. With that perspective established, you can sense that he’s very aware of how to utilize his versatile flows/melodies to capture your attention. Tying it all together, every bar feels like an Instagram caption, making this the perfect soundtrack for a summer weekend outing.
Rico Nasty – ‘RX’ (Album)
Adapting as needed, Rico Nasty is back making music and she has adjusted to the times with a current age trap/drill sound. Over the years, her strongest asset has been is her ability not to let anything define her sound and that still holds weight creatively now. In addition, we get to see her
reunite with Kenny Beats and their synergy is as great as we last remembered.
BTG Pasto – ‘STO’ (EP)
Taking a closer look at New England’s emerging music scene, it’s worth noting that BTG Pasto is their unsung hero based on his overlooked new EP. Little by little, he’s able to bring listeners into his world due to his intricate yet honest lyrics. Once you factor in, how he doesn’t waste a moment over the 15-min timespan, you’ll be highly anticipating his next full-length release.
Moneybagg Yo – “I See Why” (Single)
Beyond the surface, Moneybagg Yo has meticulously crafted one of his most thought-provoking tracks to date with “I See Why.” At a deeper level, this is a reflective trap song that discusses success, loyalty, and how fame changes relationships. Having said that, this is the type of inspirational music absent from today’s landscape.
The Game & YG – “Red People” (Single)
As a result of their Verzuz, The Game & YG made sure to capitalize on this moment with a joint single that encapsulates their West Coast unity. Regardless of his older age, The Game has miraculously found a way to sharpen his cadence and flow. If anything, their natural chemistry on this track will make you question if they have a collab album in the immediate future.
Flo Milli – “HOT AS A BIC” (Single)
Shifting gears to our female emcees, we have a fierce new single from Flo Milli titled “HOT AS BIC.” To go deeper, she did what needed to be done on this song, from her confidence, delivery, and undeniable energy. Simply put, this is everything you would want in a lead single and to usher in her new era, as it’s both bold and addictive.
Victoria Monét – “REACH OUT” (Single)
Lastly, for our last spot of New Music Friday goes to Victoria Monét and her masterpiece of a single, “REACH OUT.” In a competitive market, this song/accompanying video displays what serious artistry looks and sounds like. As proven by “On My Mama,” anytime she gets in her uptempo, dance bag it’s a wrap, because that’s her bread and butter.
