Mike Lubino (@mike_lubino) isn’t interested in surface level music. For the rising Afrobeat artist, everything starts with feeling. Before the name, before the rollout, before the visuals, there’s energy. And that energy is what drives his sound forward.
“I make music to express things you can’t always put into words,” Lubino shares. That intention is clear in how he approaches his artistry. Rooted in Afrobeat’s rhythm and movement, his music stretches into something more layered, pulling from spirituality to give each record meaning. For him, sound without soul doesn’t land.
His latest release, “Na You,” leans fully into that philosophy. The track explores a deep emotional connection that lingers, even in absence. It’s soft, but there’s weight behind it. You can hear the distance in the lyrics, but also the closeness that never really fades.
The decision to sing in another language
Part of what gives the record its texture is Lubino’s decision to sing in French. The choice wasn’t random. “Every language carries a different emotion,” he explains. For “Na You,” French allowed him to tap into a more intimate space, adding a layer of vulnerability that might not have translated the same way otherwise.
While the global conversation around Afrobeat continues to grow, Lubino isn’t focused on chasing reach. Instead, he’s focused on authenticity. “I’m not trying to be global, I’m trying to be real,” he says. It’s a mindset that reflects in both his music and his visuals, which he treats as an extension of the story. Before listeners press play, he wants them to feel something.
That same intentionality shapes how he moves as an artist. From being selective with collaborators to protecting his creative vision, Lubino is clear about building something that lasts. Not just moments, but meaning.
At its core, his goal is simple. He wants listeners to feel seen. And if the music resonates, even with someone who doesn’t know his story, that connection is enough.
