South Florida artist D.R.O.S.K.I is blending soulful production, reflective lyricism, and laidback storytelling into a sound that feels equally personal and timeless. Hailing from the West Palm Beach area with deep Dominican roots through his grandparents, music has always surrounded him. With both his father and grandfather being musicians, creativity was embedded into his upbringing long before he ever stepped behind a microphone.
During an interview with Remixd Magazine, D.R.O.S.K.I expanded on his music journey and latest project, Tropes Of A Sage.
While basketball was originally his first passion, hip-hop eventually took over naturally. “Music always been a big part of my lineage,” he explained. “It just kind of chose me.” Now, over a decade into his journey, D.R.O.S.K.I continues carving out a lane rooted in authenticity, introspection, and soulful expression.
The artist name itself comes from familiarity rather than reinvention. Alejandro naturally became “Dro” or “Droski” during high school, and the nickname eventually evolved into his artist identity.
Sonically, Dro’s music lives somewhere between stream-of-consciousness storytelling and smooth lifestyle rap. Built around jazzy instrumentation, soulful samples, and self-aware lyricism, his sound feels conversational while still carrying depth beneath the surface. Influenced by icons like Lil Wayne, Nas, 2Pac, and Soulja Slim, he also credits Curren$y for laying down a blueprint he studied closely throughout his development as an artist.
However, it was Madvillainy by MF DOOM and Madlib that ultimately inspired him to rap seriously, while legendary producers J Dilla and Nujabes sparked his passion for production.
His latest project, Tropes Of A Sage, represents the perfect balance between technical rap ability and laidback lifestyle music. Rather than delivering overly direct messaging, the project focuses more on creating a feeling and atmosphere listeners can sit with. The album’s standout track, “Petty Crimes,” embodies that approach completely. Despite not having a traditional hook, the song’s energy and replay value connected naturally with fans.
D.R.O.S.K.I also credits producer Doc Marzy for helping unlock a completely new sound throughout the album’s creation process. “Effortless,” is how he describes the chemistry between them.
As momentum continues building, the rapper is now seeing his music resonate far beyond Florida. From touring and performing in Brooklyn to discovering listeners in places like Japan, Brazil, and Australia, the rising artist says the global support still feels surreal. Moving forward, fans can expect more experimental collaborations, self-produced projects, and music designed to inspire wisdom, reflection, and spiritual connection through art.
